I guess it had to happen eventually. It won't really set in for me probably until 6 months on opening day when someone else is going out to that huddle. 16 straight seasons we watched him here. I was there at Lambeau when he came in because of an injury to Majikowski and threw a bomb to win the game in the final seconds against the Bengals in 1992. Kitrick Taylor, #85 caught it. Favre never left after that. And I was also there when he threw that gawd-awful pass against the Giants in overtime of the beyond freezing NFC Championship in January. The first pass, last one, and everything in between. I'll never forget those two plays, such opposite ends of the spectrum. So many ups & downs.

Any halfway intelligent Packer fan hated the media's absolute fawning over Favre as much as the rest of the bloggers & commenters in this here series of tubes. I literally cringed every time I heard the word "gunslinger." The majority of it was ridiculous and most of us knew it.

But he really was one of a kind. I think he was the way we all wanted to play quarterback if we could. Never again will I watch a quarterback line up under center for the Packers, and look at the person in the stands next to me and have that similar look that says, "Well, anything can fucking happen here."

Sports aren't even close to what's most important in life, but they are a great thing, a distraction, a reason to care, to come together and root for your team and your guys, to remove yourself from everything else for a few hours. And Favre was always that constant for us in that area. He embodied those ups and downs that happen to everyone in normal life. He had us elated, disgusted, filled with laughter, sick to our stomachs, and most of all, entertained.

But this must be it. I've dropped my last F-bomb and cheered until I was hoarse for the last time for him on the field. And I loved it.

But this had to happen sometime. So, thanks #4.

They are writers of different areas that never see any game besides the one they are covering on Saturday, some really stupid ex-players in the Harris Poll, and then some computers which may or may not have some validity (Do they? They seem worse than the RPI.) This is no way to crown a champion in a sport that so many people care so passionately about. The BCS sucks, and I think any reasonable persons knows this. I hate it with a passion, but it isn't changing anytime soon. I ponder on whether to keep complaining or just accept it.

No idea what to think yet, despite the impending doom factor that sets in my head over every Bucks season. My whole point of this post is that I think Yi is going to be a really solid player in this league.

What I do know thus far is that it's the Eastern Conference and they do have opportunities. The big problem though- Redd can't find any semblance of his jump shot, which is quite disturbing. He was 0-7 from three-point range tonight. 0-7!

The rotation was pretty f'd up tonight as well. Always nice when we're paying a guy 6 million a year to play 7 minutes. Bobby Simmons: bad signing or car-wreck bad signing?

Anyway, they got the Spurs on Sunday, and hopefully they'll put up a strong showing there. Again, I want to convey that I think Yi can be good, really good. Look at his line tonight on what could possibly be the most watched hoops game ever. 19 and 9, a couple steals and a block. 250 million apparently tuned in in China to watch Yao against Yi. Neither disapointed. It's actually pretty cool when you think about it.

Well, I'm kind of dissapointed as the Packers have a bye week this weekend. They're at 5-1, which is quite frankly amazing. Many people asked me before the season how they would do, and my response was always the same: "I seriously have no idea. Anything could happen." And anything has happened, unbelievably, in a good way.

So, I'm pissed I don't get a chance to see them try and go to 6-1 this week. What am I supposed to do tommorrow? Care about Minnesota-Dallas? I detest bye weeks. There's only so much NFL football every year and I have to go hungry this week. This sucks.

Yeah, About Brett Favre...

I can't be happier for Brett Favre for breaking the all time touchdown pass record last week. I was there for his first game in '92, and I'll be there for his last. The journey through his career has been nothing if not amazing. The biggest thing to take from this record though is that he doesn't give a shit if they don't win. That's genuine, and it's something that everyone should always remember years from now when talking about his legacy

But I do have another reason for this post though, and it's this:

The only thing more annoying than the overzealous verbal BJ's of Favre is the people that are complaining about it in this here blogfrica. Sure, many of the analogies being tossed around by the talking heads are ridiculous, and the fawning is a bit uncomfortable at times. I get it. Smart Packer fans get it. (yeah, there's plenty who aren't, I know.) But people writing post after post and comment after comment complaining about it are getting more annoying than Peter King, John Madden, Chris Berman, and Terry Bradshaw put together.

OK, there's no way that's possible. But you get my main point. Those commentators are not bright people and will say outrageous things to get themselves airtime. Everyone with a brain should realize this. So please, stop making your same, tired, boring jokes.

In any case, I am just going to savor the fact the Pack is 4-0 (are you fucking kidding me?) and head to Lambeau on Sunday night with high hopes*.

*high hopes= sitting on pins and needles for 3 1/2 hours.

I don't know if I've ever stated this, but I am a huge golf fan. I love the game and I've been fortunate enough to see some great courses. I've been golfing sporadically since I was about 12, but never very consistently, and now I still can't score for shit, but I do have fun trying.

That said, one of my favorite events is the Ryder Cup, as it turns this completely individual sport into a team one, and the dynamic is completely fascinating to watch.
With the President's Cup underway (the Ryder Cup's ugly little sister) I harkened back to a few of the hideous "uniforms" trotted out by the fellas in these events.
Worst. Idea. Ever.

Look at this article from the JS today. Is he fucking serious? What's almost even more amazing is that everyone in the mainstream media believes it. How stupid (or maybe just loyal) are these guys?

The situation: Top of the first, Gabe Gross on second, 1 out, Ryan Braun at the plate. Gross inexclipicably takes off for third. Braun, probably distracted by the giant tortious lumbering in his sightline, swinged and missed. Strike 3. Gross thrown out at third my about 20 feet. Double play, inning over, with Prince bewildered on the on deck circle. The Reds go on to score 6 in the Bottom of the first.

Here's Yosty's explanation for this boneheaded play- "I had a mosquito bite in a certain spot and I was itching it, and Nick thought I was putting the steal on," Brewers manager Ned Yost said, referring to third-base coach Nick Leyva.

Yeaaaahhh. It's such bullshit. Yost is notoriously protective of his favorite player or players, who are always at best medicore in talent (See: Wes Helms.) He picks a favorite and is too damn stubborn to ever admit a mistake. Gross is that, and he's making this story up. It's a fucking insult.

I find it unbelievable that only us loney bloggers can figure this out. Wake up MSM, and tell me are you just stupid or scared to write this story? Imagine if Yosty pulled this shit in New York or Boston.

Someone tried to make the point to me earlier this week - At the beginning of the season, would you have taken the Brewers in first place (albeit barely) at this point in the year?

The easy answer to this question is yes, and I've tried to rationalize my emotions with this, but it's not that easy. For a team thats been 14 games above .500 twice, it's somewhat tough to take their downfall over the last 2 months. The good news is they got a W last night in the 11th, after stranding numerous chances in the first 9 frames. Of course the Cubs won, because apparently these teams are going to do the exact same thing as the other every night.

Anyway, I had a HUGE problem this week with Yosty leaving Gallardo in when he was getting shelled. Is he trying to destroy this 21 year old's confidence? But this team needs Ben Sheets back in the lineup. (Sidebar: Ben, WTF? You need to get your ass in there.) The starting pitching sucks, and Parra should be in the rotation. Play your best players, Yosty, play your best players. It's not that difficult.

It could be that taco pizza I devoured yesterday like a high powered vacuum cleaner. I'm not sure. Yesterday was a good day though. The Cubs imploded in the ninth and Yovani was tremendous. Yet my stomach is still churning. The Cubs play the Mets on Fox in a couple hours and the Brewers will play later on with Bush taking the hill.

Still being new to any kind of pennant race, I am nervous, and have no idea how to react to all this, even though we're still in August. (This is the reason I'm writing all this down.)

Well, Milwaukee had a 6-0 lead after three against the Cardinals. And they still had a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the ninth. And they end up with a 7-6 loss. If someone could take all the belts and shoelaces out of my place I'd appreciate it. Jebus. I just don't have the mindset to provide any crappy analysis at his point.

This is at least the third time this has happened this year. (Yeah, I'm not doing any exact research on that right now.) The Brewers jump out to a huge lead very early, something like 4-6 runs, don't score the rest of the game and lose by 1 in the ninth. I'd rather lose 10-0. The amount of stress that could be avoided is amazing. If they got blown out, I could have walked the dog, bought some food, cleaned the apartment, played some golf, helped an old lady across the street, and finish that report I've been meaning to get to. Seriously, I could have gotten some work done. And in the end I'd probably save a couple years on my life.

Instead, I sit here doing nothing, drinking another beer, and wondering how the hell they can come back and play well in 2nd half of this day-night doubleheader.

I think maybe I'll go see The Simpsons movie.

The Cubs are charging, and Sheets was unable to pick up his usual stop-loss win. They ended the losing streak last night, and Bush looked pretty good. The starting pitching is my biggest concern. However, I really can't say enough about Ryan Braun. I think I may have a non-sexual crush on the guy. I'll go out on somewhat of a limb and say he'll be Rookie of the Year. Prince is in a slump, and I hate seeing him in the Home Run Derby. It can only do 2 things, fuck up his swing, and make Chris Berman come up with ways to make up nicknames involving the word "Prince."

That said, Soup needs to rebound tonight and get a win. $42 million is $42 million. Other than that, could anyone have asked much more of this team thus far? I really don't think so. Let's get a "W" tonight.

Pet Peeves #4: Health Club Mirror Guy

Yeah, and girl apparently too. About 4 months ago I joined my local Y. As a background, I grew up lifting weights here and there. I played football, basketball, and baseball in grade school and high school, so it was inevitable.

However, I am approaching 30 years old now, and as of the first of the year took up running in races. It's been interesting, because I don't like running (although I always feel better about myself when it's done.) This is a roundabout way of saying I really have a problem with the health club mirror guy. You know who I'm talking about. Seriously dude, we know you're huge and those curls look great, but do we have to watch you grunt and admire yourself while the rest of us are just trying to stay healthy, and look decent? Yeah, seriously, we're all impressed.

I can't set foot in any free weight room anymore. All I do is run a few miles on the treadmill, then do a bunch of the nautilus machines. That's it, I don't desire to be the world's strongest man. Not my cup of tea. I mentioned girls too because I think a couple of the women I see in that free weight room surrounded by precious mirrors at my local Y could and will kick my ass. I'm completely frightened by all these people. But congratulations, you all look like complete freaks.

State of This, Whatever It Is...

As I've stated in the header, I have no idea what this is, I just knew it was going to suck. But screw it, I felt like I'd do it anyway. I don't have the time to put into it that I'd like, and maybe I didn't feel like it putting time into it certain days I even could.

But, I like to get shit off my chest at times, and I find videos that I like to watch and re-watch, so it's a good place to store or share them. So this little web address is probably going to stay for now I think. Maybe it will eventually have a flow, but most likely not. I am much more a facilitator or contributor than a creator (not that those things are mutually exclusive.)

Someone told me earlier this week that they couldn't realize why people had blogs. To quote, "Why do they need to write about their daily life for everyone to see?" Yes, the HEAVY sarcastic tone was included there. Yet this person had a full blown diary/journal she admitted to having. Hmmmm. Well, for me, my penmanship is fucking horribly spectacular. Doctors' prescriptions are more legible. And I hate writing with a pen and paper woman, so screw you. Thinking back, I should have at least retorted with the fact that no one reads the garbage I spew here anyway.

Truth is, anyone who knows anything these days already knows there are a ton of tremendous blogs out there- just see the links on the right. And that's obviously just a few of my favorites to go to get my knowledge and have a few laughs at the same time.

Well, I guess all that is a roundabout way of saying this place here may be just a place where I throw my crap against the wall. Maybe unfortunately, no matter what, it will stick though. Feel free to pass right on through. I am sure you will, the writing is pretty poor. Most all is thrown up in a somewhat non-sober state. But at least the videos are funny.

The ninth inning meltdown was terrible this afternoon. Ugh. coCo blew it, and in spectacular fashion. Many of the patrons that were there are surely still drinking on at the various speakeasies that surround Wrigley. Seven straight for them. It's hurts, but it hurts 10 times worse when it happens against the Cubbies. You have to wonder at NO runs in the last 8 innings. How does that happen against Chicago?

Well, I'm just hoping Sheets is dealing tomorrow. It's on National TV too. (The Crew on National TV? Never thought I'd see this day a few years ago.) Here's to a better weekend...

And I watched with great interest the US vs. Mexico CONCACAF Gold Cup Final yesterday, and it was a fantastically entertaining match, complete with the best live goal I've ever seen, struck by Benny Feilhaber, and posted above. Just awesome.

Well, I do love my Milwaukee Brewers. 12 games above .500, 8 1/2 game lead. The above slideshow is tremendous. Your Cardinals can fade into the 2007 baseball graveyard there Leitch.

Seriously though, it looks kind of strange from here, but really, really sweet as well. Anyway, this moving picture box above is fantastic. There a Michael Redd reference in there too? Looks like it was made before stud Ryan Braun came up too, but oh well.

The shot of Uke at the end really gets me. If anyone, he really deserves this season. I think I'm going to watch this before every game to get in the proper mood.

Excited.

Yes, I am. I've mentioned it before but I have to stare at the standings to make sure they're real. ANYWAY, I have decided that I am going to post my mood on the Crew every Saturday, but it will be in just one adjective. I will do this until the end of the season, and I will give some thoughts of mine on the week that was in Brewerland (as if anyone gives a shit what I think.) So, I guess, here we go...

I am concerned about whatever this injury Hardy has, but from all I can find out, it doesn't seem serious. That said, I don't have much to say today, other than we overpaid for Suppan. $42 million over 4 years. Well, I guess he's eating some innings, but it certainly hasn't been pretty lately. He went 5 yesterday in a gawdawful outing and even got a win. But as anyone who as some semblance of intelligence knows, win-loss record means very, very little on seeing who the fine pitchers are.

A message to Ned: DO NOT BAT CRAIG COUNSELL SECOND. You have Ricky Weeks, who is raking, batting 8th. If Hardy stays out of the lineup, you want your best hitters batting as much as possible. THEY GET TO HIT MORE OFTEN THEN. Come on, Yosty, you can figure this out.

Anyway, I still am going to post about the Brewers during the week if my lazy blogging ass feels like it. And just a disclaimer, I am totally ripping this off this one word concept from J.E. Skeets over at The Basketball Jones. If you like or follow the NBA, you really have to listen to their podcasts. They're tremendous.

Happy Father's Day Dad

The reason why I am so obsessive about sports stems from my father. My Dad does coach, but he is laid back man, and he always steered but not forced his kids into athletics, and I was the first of our bunch. I have him to thank today, a wonderful man who probably couldn't tell you who plays third base for the Milwaukee Brewers right now, yet made me call off the names of the '82 roster at age 5. Times, they do change. Different priorities for different times I guess. I have an ongoing love affair with sports and the teams I root for, and it's great, (Hey, Brewers vs. Twins in 20 minutes!) and he is most responsible for this. Growing up, we played catch, we threw the football, and mostly, we played hoops in the driveway. I don't know what I would do without sports. They take us away from the daily grind, they give us a reason to cheer, to care, to be happy, sad, crushed, and at times elated. I love it.

Stopping The Snowball Rolling Downhill

After my last post, I have to say I was pretty impressed that the Crew came back to take the last 2 games of the series from the Tigers in Detroit. I'm still dissapointed that none of those seagulls ever got hit with a line drive. Where's the Big Unit when you need him? Anyway, coCo has continued to struggle a bit but his K stuff sure can get him out of jams. Still, a tough series in the Twin Cities this weekend looms. At least there's no Santana.

What to make of this team...I am not sure what they are capable of yet. Is the NL Central weak? Certainly someone can let me know their opinion on this if they have the chance? No one has touched on the competitiveness on this division yet, have they?

Well, back to the boys, Prince is a stud*, which I've been telling people he would be since he broke in 2 years ago. The young guys are really carrying the team, which is exciting. I am flat out giddy looking at the standings every night and seeing Milwaukee in 1st place. I was 5 in '82, so it's been losing, bad losing, and terrible losing forever for me for the Brewers. I am looking forward to the games this weekend in the Metrodome. In high school, I got a chance to play in the Metrodome (our team was pretty sad that year, and we got killed) and I got on a couple times and even stole a base, which was quite a thrill. I'm going to channel some good memories and hope it helps.** In any case, cheers Brewers fans, but let's make sure to not get to far ahead of ourselves.

Ned Yost Is A Moron

Well, the Brew Crew just got no-hit by the Tigers and Justin Verlander. And while it was a tremendous performance by Mr. Verlander, I just have one thing on my mind: Seriously Ned Yost, you can't be this fucking stupid. Going against one of the best young pitchers in baseball he trots out a lineup that is simply ridiculous:

Leading off: Craig "scrappy=suck" Counsell (.244 average)

Batting second: Tony "pile of shit" Graffanino (.230 average)

By the way, it's worth noting that the above two players make over $6,000,000 combined this year and their average age is 36. And hey, and whadda you know, we get a DH again in an American League park.

DH: Gabe "no nickname needed" Gross (.191 average)

So, to recap, the Brewers' two WORST hitters batted first and second and the DH position was used to play the guy with the worst average on the team. I swear, just when people say being a Manager in the major leagues is the most overrated job in sports (and it probably is) you have one go and pretty much lose the game for his team before the first pitch was thrown.

I still have absolutely no idea how Ned Yost has so much goodwill built up here. I know he's a "players manager" and all that crap, but watching him consistently bumble over decisions and fill out ludicrous lineup cards (his weakest point) I just don't understand it.

Throw me a bone Ned. Is everyone's picture on a dartboard that you toss at a couple hours before gametime? Can you not see that placing two washed up utility infielders at the top of your lineup is NOT a good idea? I may have a heart attack before this season is over. That shouldn't happen at 29. Guh.

I am at a loss after the Brewer game last night. Speechless. Up 3-0 heading to the bottom of the 9th. I don't know if there is a culture of losing that can stick with a team who has lost for so long, but it almost seems like it from a fan's perspective.

A dominating 7 innings from Sheets, hell, Turnbow closed out the 8th, and then that disaster. Not sure where this team stands. It's a tough interleague schedule all week, and I am frightened for where they could be headed. I will try and stay positive, as hard as that may be.

Pet Peeves 3: ESPN Classic

The fall from grace of ESPN over the years has been well documented by a lot of terrific bloggers and writers alike, and will probably be dissected at hilarious length in an upcoming book so I'm not even going to get into that. My reason for this post is what ESPN chooses to do with what could truly be a fantastic channel: ESPN Classic.

With the power the WWL yields, and the access they have, why the hell do we not see more of the classic basketball, football, and baseball games that were played over the years? What about some of the great golf tournaments & tennis matches? March Madness? I could go on and on here. Yes, I know they will occasionaly have the "Instant Classic" game, which is all fine and good, but the 2004 World Series of Poker should not be on a supposed "Classic" sports channel. Instead, it's poker, some bowling, pool, drag racing, streetball, blah, blah, blah.

So, to conclude, fuck you ESPN, you could be bringing me some of the great sporting events from my childhood and beyond, but instead I get to see some And-1 dude travel 3 times while idiots applaud and then see if No-Name McFattypants gets his straight on the river. Just shoot me now.

Pet Peeves 2: Own Name On Jersey

I don't personally own any replica jerseys of any players on my favorite teams. But hey, if that's what floats your motorboat, so be it. Go for it. Gotta support the team. Hell, who doesn't really enjoy the new trend of putting something funny on the back of a jersey? (See: Mexico, #7 Atlanta Falcons.)

But if you have ever, ever plastered your own last name on the back of your team's uniform, you are with out a doubt, a gigantic fucking moron. Some of you may not see this too often. I understand it is rare in some parts. But at Lambeau Field it is a goddamn epidemic. They're everywhere. In years past, it used to piss me off to no end. What the fuck? What would possess someone to do this? Are you that removed from reality?

Well, as I've gotten a little older, and matured a little (yeah, right) it has been custom to just point and say "Douchebag!" and laugh as Miller Lites & brats are sucked down at an unhealthy rate. However, this year, I think I'm actually going to confront at least one of these idiots, and see if I can find out the method to their stupidity. I'll take notes, and report them back here. I think it could be a fascinating sociological experiment.

If you know someone who has said this before, they are a complete moron. Discontinue any friendship you had with them immediately. And if you think Larry The Cable Guy is funny, you should end your life right now. And if you are one of the sorry people with this ridiculous slogan as a bumper sticker, there is a special place for you in Retardville.

In closing, I understand that not everyone can be somewhat intelligent, but again, if you yourself do think this little saying is funny or cute, SEEK HELP. NOW.

A Dangerous Precedent?

The NBA has suspended Amare Stoudamire and Boris Diaw for tommorow's Game 5 against the Spurs, and while I understand the letter of the law on leaving the bench during at altercation, this sets a dangerous precedent.

Robert Horry has essentially become clutch yet again by checking Nash out of bounds, which in effect caused 2 key Suns to come off the bench a bit (but not get in any way involved,) and thus essentially, if the Spurs win Game 5, could determine the NBA champions.

If this rule stays the way it is, and I'm the coach, I'm having my one of my goons/scrubs deck one the other team's stars in the playoffs when some or any of their key players are on the bench and see what happens. I know my reaction on the bench would not be to stay laid back in my seat. Interesting game coming tomorrow. I know I'll be watching. Hmmmm...maybe that was the NBA's idea?

(Not addressed: Duncan's leaving the bench on a separate incident. Come on, you know the NBA wouldn't take him out of a playoff game! Sheesh.)
